A cosy retreat nestled in a thriving market town, the garden of this Grade II listed cottage rises up towards Richmond Castle. An ideal base for families looking to enjoy a unique location and catch up in style.

Set in the heart of Richmond, a Georgian market town brimming with shops, restaurants and quirky boutiques, there is plenty to see and do nearby. Walk to the 11th century castle and learn all about the area's past, before treating yourself to a bite to eat in one of the many eateries. A wander around the old cobbled market square is a must, as is a cup of real Yorkshire tea. Known as the gateway to the Dales, Richmond is encompassed by gorgeous scenery. Go for a picnic alongside the River Swale or for a day of family fun, visit the excellent Forbidden Corner, only 14 miles away.

Dating back to the 18th century, this property has lots of original charm. Accessed from the cobbled Georgian promenade, you will immediately enter a hallway with period tiling. From here, the lovely lounge awaits. With great views over the cobbled street outside, the lounge boasts a delightful mix of classic and contemporary and a great space to unwind. Delve into the pages of a book, turn on the Smart TV or play a classic board game together; the cosy sofas and toasty wood burner make this room hard to leave however you pass the time. To the rear of the cottage, you will come to the kitchen/diner. Here, an AGA sits within an Inglenook fireplace, and a central dining table takes pride of place. With attractive, traditional themes, you can cook up a feast in this homely space and make use of the range of appliances and equipment available. These include a ceramic hob, fridge and handy dishwasher in the kitchen, as well as a washer, dryer and freezer in the property's outhouse. Upstairs are all of the bedrooms. Featuring two doubles and a twin (which can also be set up as a king-size), everyone can look forward to restful nights' sleep. Also upstairs is the family bathroom, home to a bath with overhead shower.

For sunny mornings and balmy evenings, there is a tiered secret garden-style area outside. Split over several levels, the garden eventually gives rise to the castle walls and provides an enchanted space in which to enjoy a brew or glass of wine. With a choice of seating areas, you can sit in the shade or sprawl out in the sunshine. There is also a BBQ ready for budding chefs to fire up a feast.

Please note, due to the number of steps the garden it is not suited to those with reduced mobility and children must be supervised. As with most Richmond cottages, there is no off-road parking, a small price to pay for a location within 30 seconds of the Market Place. There is parking available close by, and you can pull up to the front door of Castle & Cobbles to unload.

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

  • 3 bedrooms: 2 doubles, 1 twin (that can also be made into a king-size)

Set right at the heart of Richmond, a charming Georgian market town on the borders of Wensleydale and Swaledale. The back garden rises up to meet the outer walls of Richmond Castle and the front door of the cottage opens out on to the walkway which was cut into the cliff face in the Georgian era when promenading was popular. JMW Turner painted this aspect of Richmond Castle after the cottage was completed but chose to leave the cottage and its neighbour out of his painting.

Richmond boasts an 11th century castle, fine Georgian architecture, an historic Georgian theatre (one of the oldest British theatres still in use) and a large cobbled market square as some of its many attractions. Mosey into town for a cup of Yorkshire Tea at one of the many tea rooms there or pop over for dinner at of the town’s excellent restaurants, some of which are just around the corner. Richmond is also known as 'The Gateway to the Dales' so you can expect stunning Dales scenery within minutes of leaving the town. Peppering this glorious countryside are countless attractive little towns and villages. And if you enjoy a bit of surreal entertainment for the whole family, how about quite brilliant Forbidden Corner (14 miles) near Middleham.

The historic hamlet of Easby, home to Easby Abbey, is just a 1.5 miles from the cottage and is easily walkable along the river. Set on the banks of the River Swale, the Abbey is the perfect spot for a picnic in the summer months. This is a superb area for walkers and cyclists with many routes from the doorstep. The famous coast to coast walking route passes close by. Follow in the cycle tracks of the Tour de France stars who cycled here in the summer of 2014 too.

Just spent a lovely relaxing week in this gorgeous cottage. Quirky and traditional (from the 18th Century). The weather wasnt kind but the burner and AGA compensated well. Right in the centre, with restaurants, pubs and shops only 2 minutes walk as are the beautiful Swaledale Waterfalls. So well equipped with quality finishes. Highly recommend.
