This starkly beautiful area of Scotland, with its sparse population and few settlements, makes for wonderful walking. Just down the road from the property, less than a mile away, is the Aird Old Church Gallery. After admiring the art, follow the trail until you reach a tiny harbour, and from there you can continue on to the lighthouse for breathtaking sea views at The Point of Sleat. Another popular walk is to join a trail at Kinloch Forest (14 miles) which takes you along an old drovers' road to an abandoned village. Also great for a stroll is Rubha Shleite (2 miles), a beautiful sandy beach in a sheltered bay where you can settle for the afternoon with a picnic, and further afield the dramatic ruins of Dunscaith Castle (13.5 miles) perched above the sea. Along the coast you'll find quaint villages, including Ardvasar (3.5 miles) and Armadale (4 miles), where you can stock up on supplies from the local shop, and sit down for a cup of tea and a piece of cake in a cafe. Armadale also has its fair share of visitor attractions. At the end of the pier is the Isle of Skye Leather company, which sells handmade items and creates bespoke orders, and if you fancy going back in time and travelling in style, there are regular carriage rides leaving from the village. Armadale Castle, Gardens and Museum (5 miles) has 40 acres to explore, as well as exhibitions on the history of the Isles, and two gift shops.

This is a well presented modern cottage with fantastic views, we even saw sea eagles. There's a lovely walk (about 10k) to a beach over a farm track, it's rated medium but while raining it's a difficult track. At that beach we saw seals approaching the bay while taking a dip in the beautiful waters. There's a much shorter walk (15 mins) to another Read morebeach but this is rather small and due to the rocks not suitable for swimming. There's lots more to around with a bit of car travelling. 9/10 Hide

Cnoc An Theine is a fantastic well-equipped cottage in the most stunning location. The decked area with table and chairs is fantastic for spending hours just relaxing and looking out over the water. It's also secure so the dogs could be out there with us without their leads. Mags popped up to check all was OK which was very thoughtful. Only a few mRead moreiles from Armadale so we took the ferry over from Mallaig. There's a well stocked local shop in Armadale and a large co-op slightly further afield in Broadford with very reasonably priced fuel. The Inn at Ardvasar is also just a few miles up the road and recommended for a quick drink on the way home or an evening meal. We'd have stayed here a second week if the cottage had been available!
