  • A cute and cosy off-grid barn set in an isolated hillside location
  • Unrivalled views across the beautiful Black Mountains
  • Dramatic night skies from your private terrace
Property code: 48085

A beautiful off-grid barn in the heart of the Black Mountains, complete with log fired sauna & sublime natural surroundings. Breathtaking views, roaring woodburner and hill walks right from the door.

A beautiful artistic off-grid hideaway in the heart of the hills. Perched high on the slopes of the Black Mountains in the midst of the Brecon Beacons National Park, enjoy breath-taking views and dramatic night skies from the terrace, or stride out for endless trails through bluebell woods and ancient meadows.

Crickhowell is just ten minutes’ drive away with local traders, a handy mountaineering shop, pubs and plenty of coffee shops. Abergavenny, of Food Festival fame is ten minutes in the other direction, a thriving market town forming the heart of Wales foodie revolution. Cathedral towns of Brecon and Hereford are also within easy reach, as well as Wales Industrial Heritage sites in Blaenavon. Nearby attractions include beautiful walks directly in to the Black Mountains and Sugar Loaf Mountain, cycle hire available with National cycle routes and mountain biking centres throughout the area. Pony trekking throughout the nearby Llanthony Valley, fishing on the River Usk, canoeing on the River Wye and high wire and zip wire adventures at Llangorse Lake.

With a quirky and original layout, Hillside Barn is the perfect cottage for a couple or family looking for something a little bit different. The living room has patio doors leading out to the garden with BBQ table and chairs and incredible countryside views. With wood burner, (first basket of logs included), comfortable sofas TV and DVD along with its open plan kitchen/ dining area with gas oven and hob, fridge, dining table and chairs. Both bedrooms are accessed via external steps with romantic fairy lights guiding your way. There is one double which leads onto the twin bedroom with additional single bed, sleeping a total of 5. Please note the only WC is located downstairs and must be accessed by going outside and then re-entering on the ground floor. For this reason we do not recommend the property for anyone with any mobility issues or very small children. Downstairs is the shower room with WC.

Outside is the stunning terrace area with garden furniture and BBQ, woodland, and also the wind turbine and solar panels, the natural spring, and log stores. There is a rustic wood fired sauna, which is shared with the sister property Hillside Barn which can be found lower down the hillside and is completely separate and private to Blackthorn.

Please note that the property is Off-Grid and it is particularly well-suited for guests interested in reducing their environmental footprint and using resources sparingly. The water is from the spring, power from wind and sun, heat from logs, and the Wi-Fi is (unlimited) 4G. Fossil fuel support (for when eco-equilibrium proves challenging) is present in the form of a diesel generator and gas-fired radiators.

  • 2 bedrooms – 1 double and 1 triple (both reached via external steps)
  • 1 bathroom – 1 shower room with WC (accessed via external steps from the bedrooms)
  • TV, DVD
  • Wood burner
  • Radiators for occasional use are available
  • Cot and highchair available on request
  • Terrace area and garden, plus guests can explore the private woodland and glade
  • Dry storage available for bikes
  • Shared wood-fired sauna with Hammam towels and outdoor shower (shared with neighbouring cottage)
  • Children to take care with external steps
  • Regret no washing machine
  • Please keep dogs off the furniture
  • The cottage is accessed via a steep driveway
  • Please note that this is an eco-retreat, so we ask that you avoid excess water usage and turn off taps when not in use. To avoid burning diesel unnecessarily, please turn off lights when leaving rooms empty and avoid leaving gas radiators on when not in the room
  • Shops, pubs and restaurants 3 miles
  • Arrival: 17:00 onwards
  • Departure: before 10:00 unless otherwise stated in your arrival details
  • 2 dogs allowed. Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week

A great little barn. Walks all around the area including some directly from the property . Dog friendly garden 50m2 ish, half on a slope and full of vegetation to give the dogs something to sniff and look out over the valley. Our dog was fascinated by the sheep in the field next door. A wonderful spot with loads of character! Brilliant location for cycling and hiking - didn't need to get into the car once after we arrived. The roads around are really quiet, the house is comfortable, and there is a nice sense of ease with nature whilst there.

We loved hillside barn. It was in an idyllic location and the site had been developed really creatively. Small but perfectly formed, the barn had everything we needed and walks straight from the door. The private woodland was lovely, especially for an early morning or evening walk. Hillside Barn is absolutely gorgeous. We loved the quirkiness of this eco retreat and really got into the spirit of recycling, reducing and reusing everything - which actually didnt take much effort at all. The location is stunning and we enjoyed walks in the mountains right from the doorstep. We also drove a short distance to climb up Sugar Loaf. Hillside Barn is a truly unique place to stay. The location is incredible as it is situated half way up the valley side in a very unspoilt part of the Black Mountains. Beautiful, peaceful location and very comfortable. No need to use the car as surrounded with some lovely walks from your front door. My boxer dog was truly at home here and enjoyed his freedom. My older girls lived the surroundings and lived the environmentally friendly elements of this fantastic accommodation. Sad it was only a short stay.
