  • A delightfully quirky cottage that wears its history for all to see
  • A stone’s throw from the literary town of Hay-on-Wye
  • Walk, ride or drive through the dramatic scenery of the Welsh border
Property code: BN226

Situated a short distance north of Hay-on-Wye, this characterful former gatehouse provides a great base for exploring the ‘town of books’, the River Wye and the borderland of England and Wales.

At just 0.5 miles from the centre of Hay-on-Wye and the River Wye, this early Victorian lodge offers something for everyone. You might choose to explore the second-hand and antiquarian bookshops, boutiques, antique shops and art galleries in the town, before dining in one of the local eateries or enjoying a picnic by the river. Alternatively, you might prefer to burn a little more energy and hire a canoe or take to your bike, or perhaps make the short journey south to The Black Mountains, or the 15-mile trip to Brecon, your gateway to miles of mountain trekking and cycling among the peaks of the Brecon Beacons.

Now over 200 years old, this slightly quirky old cottage has lots of delightful period features including flagstone floors, oak beams, oak doors and floorboards. In places there is low headroom and despite being set on one level there are a couple of steps up into the bedrooms, which might not suit guests with limited mobility. Featuring a separate kitchen, dining room and living room, the lodge comfortably accommodates four guests, with a wood burner in the living room for cosy nights in and patio doors in the dining room that open up onto a sunny terrace on warmer days. The bathroom features both a bath and electric shower, depending on your preference, and a choice of two elegantly styled bedrooms – one double and one twin.

The lodge is situated in a large, partially enclosed garden with a lawn area and terrace with garden furniture. The terrace is a wonderful spot to quietly sit on sunny days, admiring the views up the hill or down the valley to Hay-on-Wye, or to wind down in the evening after a day of exploration. Don’t forget to bring your BBQ!

Dogs are charged at £20 each per full or part week.

Perfect cottage close to the centre of Hay-On-Wye. A great base to explore the Brecon Beacons

Bad points No 'starter pack' left for the log burner as advertised. Not even any matches. The creaky floorboards in the bedroom aren't endearing. They are simply loud and not fixed down next to the fireplace making it impossible to exit the room quietly. There is an ill fitting wooden door between the two bedrooms that removes all semblance Read moreof privacy. The garden is technically surrounded by wall and fence, but a small dog could fit through the gaps and a big dog would just jump over. Our collies were fine as they are reasonably obedient, but it would have been a different matter should sheep have been next door. One morning our peace was shattered just as I was about to have a shower by gardeners entering the garden with a ride on mower and strimmer to eviscerate the sodden, already short for this time of year grass. No knock on the door to announce themselves and when I suggested that would have been courteous I was told people had normally left for the day. Excuse me for relaxing on my holiday. The grass was left far too short given the weather and they took great clods off in places. Most of the windows have no curtains. The shower is an economy electric one so whilst you have guaranteed hot water it is far from a power shower. Good points It's not luxury accommodation so we didnt feel uncomfortable having the dogs there. The internet and TV work ok, as do all appliances in the kitchen Its 5 minutes walk to the local shop, and 10 minutes in to Hay itself. Lots of birds and wildlife to look out at. Bed, towels etc all clean. Hide
