Located on the peaceful Isle of Barra, this bolthole is perfect for families in search of an idyllic escape from everyday life. One of the most beautiful small islands in Britain, Barra boasts a fascinating history, beautiful white sandy beaches and picturesque lochs. Only 8 miles long and 4 miles wide, you are never far away from the island’s amenities. For something sweet, pop into the post office for one of their famous homemade scones, the perfect way to start or finish a day.

Once a 19th-century fishing port, Castlebay (3 miles) is now a thriving town with shops, hotels, swimming pool and an internet cafe. From here, take to the water with Clearwater Paddling to a world of beautiful islands and sheltered bays or play a round or two on the most westerly golf course in the UK. No visit to Barra is complete without a trip to Kisimul Castle, which dates back to the 15th century and sits proudly on a rock in the middle of Castlebay. Brevig Standing Stone tells the tale of island life gone by. Keen walkers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to this diverse island, from the rugged trails with island views on Heaval (1.5 miles) to the most southerly inhabited island of Vatersay (6 miles), which is accessed via a causeway and boasts sublime beaches. Once you have finished exploring the island itself, hop on a boat to reach the Uists and Benbecula with their hard landscapes, long horizons and big skies.

This was a fab cottage in a fantastic location, my husband , my oldest son , his wife and two grandchildren and the dog loved it also. The cottage was well laid out with a master bedroom, a second double and a room with two single beds perfect for the kids. It was very well equipped, with lovely garden furniture in the shed, which was useful for stRead moreoring bikes , shoes and our kayak. It was clean and the furniture was great. There were a few charming quirks , which did not detract from the holiday at all. A big plus was the fence around the property, which made it safe for the children aged six and four as well as the dog, who could not get out. I thoroughly recommend this and have booked again for next year. Hide

We have recently had a wonderful week on the Isle of Barra, staying in this lovely holiday cottage. The house was spotless, warm, comfortable and was very well equipped. It is ideally located, just 7 minutes drive from Castlebay, 12 minutes to the west coast beaches, 17 mins to Vatersay and likewise to the Barra airport area. The housekeeper was veRead morery friendly and helpful too. If the house is available next time I visit Barra I would not hesitate to book it again. Recommended. Hide
