Located in such close proximity to Roseberry Topping, Great Ayton is a popular with walkers and outdoor lovers alike and is a perfect base for exploring the North York Moors. The summer months are popular when the moors turn purple with lightly scented heather. Explore Captain James Cook's childhood school is now home to Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum and a day is dedicated to him every October where you can have a great day out. Slightly further afield is The Cleveland Way, a National Trail in ancient Cleveland, 110 miles between Helmsley and the Brigg at Filey, skirting the North York Moors National Park. You’ll be impressed from the minute you stand outside this beautiful white cottage with iron railings and chequered tile path leading to the front door.

Stepping inside you’ll enter a lovely light filled hallway with stairs heading up to the bedrooms. Instantly you will feel at home with the classic and homely retreat. Cosy up in the sitting room in front of the open fire and keep the shutters closed for a real warm night in, watch a movie on the TV with Apple TV including Netflix and Amazon Prime or pick a book and put your feet up for a good read. Head into the kitchen, with electric oven and gas hob, microwave and fridge/freezer, where you can prepare a feast for the family and sit around the large dining table for a relaxed breakfast with the beautiful crockery provided. Following a day of discovery, head upstairs to the first floor, for a good night’s sleep in one of the two beautiful bedrooms. There is a master king-size bedroom (tempur mattress) and a twin bedroom. The bathroom is truly a great place to relax those tired muscles after a long day exploring the beautiful surroundings, with freestanding bath, basin and WC.

The attractive village of Great Ayton has a wonderful village vibe. With a selection of pubs, restaurants, cafes and tearooms, you could eat out every night if you wanted to. As home to a young Captain Cook, there is also the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum which allows you to explore his early life in the surrounding area. If you love to walk, from Great Ayton you can walk up to Roseberry Topping (2.5 miles); a prominent hill with lots of walking trails that lead up to the distinctive summit and cliffs.

The vibrant little village of Osmotherley (13.5 miles) is well known as a starting point for walkers and cyclists. This gorgeous little place is real picture-postcard stuff. It also offers excellent facilities including a cafe, village stores and a fish and chip shop. If you're a bit of a foodie, this part of Yorkshire is packed with fantastic gastropubs, restaurants and delis. Situated within the western reaches of the North York Moors, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1987, Osmotherley has close proximity to lush pastures and woodlands. The western Moors play host to grand country houses, atmospheric ruins and handsome market town and the views from here are simply stunning - there are walks and cycle routes in every direction. You are very close to the famous Cleveland Way as well as many more well-known and picturesque moorland walks, some of which lead all the way to the sea.

Great Ayton''s position at the northern end of the North York Moors means the coast is easily accessible from here. To breathe in the fresh, sea air, head to seaside town Saltburn-by-the-Sea (11 miles) with its pier, cliff tramway, golden sand and clean surf.
