Set in the grounds of a stunning manor house in a pretty village close to York, this handsome, charming and romantic cottage makes a lovely retreat for a couple seeking to explore this beautiful area.

The picturesque village of Holtby is set in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds and makes a lovely base for exploring North Yorkshire. The vibrant and historic city of York (6 miles) is known for its quaint cobbled streets, fascinating museums and historic buildings. Attractions include York Minster, The Shambles, Jorvik and Castle Museum. Outside the city there are miles of beautiful walks and cycle trails to enjoy with stunning scenery and plenty of pubs and restaurants in the surrounding towns and villages including Flaxton and Sutton-on-the-Forest (both 9 miles). Heading north, you can visit Castle Howard (12 miles) and Kirkham Abbey (10 miles) which are in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

On arriving at this delightful reverse-level bolthole, head up to the first floor where you will find the bright, spacious and tastefully furnished open-plan lounge/kitchen/diner. The light-filled lounge is a cosy space to relax in, complete with Smart TV and plenty of comfortable seating. A Juliet balcony offers charming views out across the gardens of the manor house. There's also a welcoming and ideally situated dining area, and the stylish bespoke kitchen features a marble worktop and is fully equipped with everything you may need to prepare a lovely romantic meal. Returning to the ground floor you will find the generous bedroom which features oak floorboards and a striking Four-poster bed. There is also an en-suite shower room with a shower, heated floors and WC.

Stepping outside you can relax in the completely private patio area which has garden furniture and is perfect for enjoying a drink in the evening. You can also explore the grounds of the manor house, including a large walled garden and an orchard, with pigs and chickens also on-site.

The loft is set in the village of Holtby, a charming little village in the Yorkshire Wolds less than 7 miles from central York. You have the best of both worlds here, the delightful small village atmosphere of old Yorkshire twinned with the vibrant city of York nearby.

The jewel in North Yorkshire's crown, we think this is one of the best visitor destinations in England. But don't just take our word for it. Voted 'Best UK City' by the Telegraph's travel section in 2008, York is a favourite amongst even the most seasoned of travellers. Make your way around its medieval cobbled streets and discover the many shops, cafes and restaurants.

Holtby is an ideal base from which to explore all that this area has to offer. Still a relatively quiet location in terms of tourism, the Yorkshire Wolds are a range of beautiful low rolling hills rising from the river Humber and sweeping along to the stunning cliffs at Flamborough Head, peppered with countless pretty villages and towns. A favourite with David Hockney, it inspired many of his greatest works including 'Bigger Trees Near Warter in 2007' - his largest ever work. The gentle nature of the countryside here also makes it an excellent location for walking and cycling.

The Wolds are also home to many historical homes and religious sites, as well as one of Yorkshire's largest lavender gardens. The Yorkshire Coast, North York Moors and Yorkshire Coast also make for a great day trip.

Loved our stay at Willoughbys Loft, spacious modern apartment in lovely peaceful grounds. Not much in Holtby itself but if you have a car some really good days out in York, the Yorkshire Moors and some lovely coastal towns.

The cottage was very basic, no cooker apart from a convection microwave with no instructions not ideal. No wardrobe to hang clothes up. The property also benefitted of having a garden which was why I chose the property so that we could just let our dog out before we go to bed this wasnt possible as we had a gate going across our small patio area wiRead moreth table and chairs, although told later in the week that it could be opened and that the dog could go into garden. The cottage was lovely, the surroundings to Match. We got to the cottage and they had made us some homemade scones and left bread and milk was a lovely touch. We found them very helpful as well telling what was about and how to travel altogether it was a pleasant experience.

Loved this cottage, only one drawback, could use a wardrobe or something for some hanging space.Apart from that we would go back again and intend to in the summer. If thats the only problem then that makes it ok in our book.
