There are endless places to eat and drink along these streets, not to mention historical sites to discover, like the graveyard that inspired J.K. Rowling's spookiest characters and the Scott Monument, an impressive gothic structure dedicated to Scottish writer, Sir Walter Scott.

Edinburgh is a stunningly festive city, with the renowned Fringe Festival rolling in every August, bringing unknown and celebrity acts to perform at hallowed venues in all parts of town. Of course, there's plenty within its bounds to keep you entertained for decades, but if you fancy a jaunt outside the city, head east to the characterful seaside town of Portobello, 4 miles away, with its sandy beach, seafood haunts, and great dog walks.

You could even take a day trip north-west into the Highlands, and explore the Munros, valleys, and lochs of rural Scotland. Or, experience another amazing Scottish city with a different vibe, Glasgow, just a 47-mile drive or train ride away.
